Novak Djokovic begins the defence of his Grand Slam crown, but as ever will face tough competition from Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal.

Djokovic and Roddick through to round two

A straight sets victory over Paolo Lorenzi set up a second round match with Colombia’s Santiago Giraldo for the defending champion. Djokovic dropped just two games in the opener, winning the second and third sets to love. The Serbian potentially faces Nicolas Mahut in round three after the Frenchman upset the seeded Radek Stepanek and beats wildcard Tatsuma Ito as expected.

Andy Roddick was equally comfortable in his progress, outclassing Dutchman Robin Haasae winning 6-3 6-4 6-1, to set up a mouth-watering match against Lleyton Hewitt in the next stage. The Australian, given a wild card on home soil, needed four sets to overcome Cedrik-Marcel Stebe of Germany. Also in this section Canada’s Milos Raonic will play Philipp Petzschner in round two.

Tipsarevic survives Tursunov test

Dmitry Tursunov surprised ninth seed Janko Tipsarevic by winning the opening set of their first round encounter and pushing the second all the way to a tie break. The Serb won that decider 14-12 and took the third and fourth to get over the line. Australia’s James Duchworth will be Tipsarevic’s opponent in round two. After that he will expect to face Frenchman Richard Gasquet.

David Ferrer, the fifth seed, will come up against the USA’s Ryan Sweeting after both players enjoyed straight sets victories in round one. Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina beat Mike Russell to book his place in the next phase and will meet Spaniard Pablo Andujar.

Murray makes it through

Great Britian’s Andy Murray came from a set down to beat American Ryan Harrison 4-6 6-3 6-4 6-2. There’s nothing to worry the world number four particularly in this part of the draw and he should make it to the business end of the competition where he is likely to meet Gael Monfils in round four.

All-France clash on the horizon

Giles Simon and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga seem destined for a fourth round meeting, though both made tough work of their opening matches. Much like Murray’s pool there is little to stop either progressing through the early phases baring a shock.

Fish and Del Potro on course to meet

American Mardy Fish and Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro are expected to make it through this part of the draw and go head-to-head for a spot in the quarter finals. The number eight and eleven seeds dispatched their first round opponents.

Federer breezes through

Roger Federer, a four time winner of the Australian Open, made short work of Russian qualifier Alexander Kudryavtsev to set up a second round meeting with Andreas Beck. After that the Swiss will expected to face Jurgen Melzer and then either thirteenth seed Alekandr Dolgopolov or Bernard Tomic, the conqueror of Fernando Verdasco.

Berdych eyeing Wawrinka

Seventh seed Tomas Berdych should have an easy passage to the quarter finals, but is likely to meet Stanislas Wawrinka or Spaniard Nicolas Almagro at the end of the this pool. The Swiss must defeat Marcos Baghdatis in round two.

Isner and Nadal on collision course

John Isner was pushed hard by wildcard Benjamin Mitchell, but still won it straight sets and the American will meet David Nalbandian in round two. Nikolay Davydenko tasted defeat however at the hands of Italian Flavio Cipolla who next faces eighteenth seed Feliciano Lopez.

Rafael Nadal, the 2009 winner in Melborune, enjoyed a straight sets win over qualifier Alex Kuznetsov and comes up against Tommy Haas in the next match. American Donald Young is likely to be the Spaniard’s opponent in round three, but compatriot Isner is more likely to cause problems.
